Inside the cover:

Gardening is one of the most satisfying things to do.
Spend an hour or two in the garden and stresses, irritations and bad moods disappear. Sure, you might end up with blistered hands, bruised knees and a sore back, but those are minor problems compared with how good you feel mentally and spiritually.
I started gardening as a child when my mom gave me a little chunk of garden to plant and tend. I planted petunias, if I remember correctly, and gardening rooted in my soul for good. Over the years since, I’ve gardened off and on, enjoying the flowers I planted and nurtured and the peace they brought to me.
I put in bulbs, annuals, perennials. Hostas, Solomon’s seal, iris, geraniums, sedum, coneflowers, alyssum, tulips, daffodils, impatiens. I just planted whatever I wanted and it grew, mostly. If it didn’t, I grew something else. I did my research as far as sun and shade, dry and wet went, but I never really gave much thought to the soil. After talking to the experts for this book, I realized I was rather lucky to have good soil that didn’t need amending.
I no longer have a garden but my balcony has flower-filled containers every summer, both annuals and perennials since I like taking chances with things like hostas. I help my oldest sister with her garden from time to time.
On weekends, I take walks through my neighbourhood and during the growing season, I check out everyone’s front gardens for what’s growing and blossoming. Over the years, I’ve come to the conclusion that not enough people garden. We could use more colour and growing things to lighten our lives.
If you’ve never gardened, this eBook is aimed at you. “From the Ground Up” is a gardening guide for people who want to garden and even those who are fairly new to it. It’s intended as a jumping-off point, a book that will give you the basics, a good grounding, if you will, and point you in the right directions for specific issues.
Enjoy. And happy gardening.

Digging into a first garden can seem a bit complicated for a novice.
While I’ve always lent a hand to my mom in her efforts, my first solo foray into gardening was in the summer of 2012 when I tackled a plot at the Whitby Ajax Community Garden, growing a variety of vegetables.
It was a revelation and the beginning of what I think will be a life-long passion.
One of the biggest lessons I learned is gardening is easy. In fact, it’s a lot easier than I ever expected.
The trick is to be diligent. That means watering thoroughly when it’s dry, picking the larva and eggs off leaves when bugs start to set up shop on your plants and keeping the garden weeded.
No garden is perfect and not everything will thrive in a gardening season, but at the end of the day there’s always something to consider a success whether it’s that first bunch of radishes, a bumper crop of tomatoes or a sprig of fresh basil to season your dinner.
I don’t believe in green thumbs. I think real success in the garden comes from hard work. And how much work you put in is wholly dependant on how big a garden you plant. Perhaps it takes a lifetime to really master gardening, but I’m proof that you can pick up the basics in almost no time and that’s exactly what we’re trying to get across in this book.
So roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. I guarantee the rewards will be well worth the effort.
