

During the first Royal visit to Barrie in a century, Princess Anne will have the honour of dedicating an important monument being made right here. The princess will be unveiling this monument to Canadian recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest medal for valour in the commonwealth. Darrin Cunnington, craftsman at Tompkins and Heels Monuments, is putting the finishing touches on the seven-foot high obelisk. Engraving the name of William Nickerson, from New Brunswick. Nickerson was member of the Royal Army Medical corps awarded the Victoria Cross for his action on April 20th 1900, during the Second Boer War. Under heavy fire Nickerson helped a wounded soldier, dressed his wounds and stayed with him until help arrived. Gerry Heels, owner of Tompkins and Heels Monuments Inc., left, and his team will be installing the monument near the South Shore Centre on Friday. Photo cost is $25.
